The Bulgarian capital has a handsome network of 19th-century boulevards and squares and a beautiful background.  As you stroll through the city centre you can think about how Bulgaria separated itself from the Soviet bloc in 1989, since then few native English-speakers have followed the golden arches of McDonald's or the designer boutiques into Sofia's streets.

This makes the city mysterious, and rather more exotic than most European capitals.  It is a short flight from London and other European countries.  Many people from Spain, France, Holland and England visit the Black Sea.

It is also startlingly green and open. Although it is a city of  of more than a million people, it feels more like a garden city, with its avenues of trees, large grass open spaces and vistas towards Mount Vitosha, the wooded granite whaleback on the edge of the suburbs where locals ski in winter. And when the weather is fine and the parks and cafes are full ii is a relaxed and fun city to explore.
