A recent study, conducted by Rauch Associates, an independent research firm, compared the complexity and time required for typical management tasks with Oracle9i Database Release 2 and with IBM's DB2 Version 8.1. Rauch Associates compared management tasks in four areas - database setup and configuration, ongoing database administration, performance tuning and backup and recovery. The study examined these tasks in terms of the number of steps required, which served as a measure of complexity, as well as the overall time required to complete these tasks. Oracle9i Database was less complex than DB2 in three of four areas, and took less time than DB2 in every area. The study then used an estimate of the approximate workload for a normal database administrator to weight the time savings with Oracle9i Database. Oracle9i Database required only 55% of the time needed for the standard management tasks for DB2. Less time means savings in ongoing management tasks. This greatly reduced management burden can translate into $37,054 in savings per administrator in the first year alone - and these savings continue to grow for the life of your Oracle9i database. IBM may claim that their 'autonomic' database is easier to manage, but this independent study shows that DB2 generates much more management overhead than Oracle9i.
